Meet the 2011 Songwriting Winners!

It's official: The winners have been declared in the 2011 Songwriting Competition!

All eligible entries were judged according to the contest criteria (see the contest details here).  There were two outstanding entries, but one of them had already been professionally recorded.  That created a problem, since first prize was professional recording of the song, plus a free trip to the Songwriters' Boot Camp at the Christian Musician Summit in Buffalo, New York.

This problem was solved by awarding TWO first prizes!

In alphabetical order by last name, the 2011 winners were:

Both winners were awarded a free trip to the Songwriters' Boot Camp, a full-day event where songwriters can hear from professional Christian songwriters, producers, publishers and industry experts.  Songwriters' Boot Camp, and the CMS, are independent productions that aim to get more great-quality Christian music out to churches, and out to the world.  (They are independent productions, and not affiliated with DeoSound.)

This year's event was on May 12, and brought Jude and Sean together with 30 other songwriters from the eastern states and southern Ontario.  There was a great range of talent there, both amateur and professional.  Some of the Christian music experts that Jude and Sean heard from:

  • Rick Cua, with 12 albums to his credit and a stint at EMI Christian Music Publishing
  • Bob Halligan Jr, with platinum records on his basement walls for his songs in his earlier years for artists from Cher and Michael Bolton through to heavy metal rockers, known widely for crafting great songs
  • John Mark McMillan, singer/songwriter, writer of the worship song "How He Loves"
  • Laura Story, singer/songwriter, bassist, keyboardist and worship leader, 2009 winner of Inspirational Album of the Year, and writer of the widely-sung song "Indescribable"
  • Jimi Williams of EMI CMG Publishing where he is Director of Worship Resources, and elsewhere a pastor, church planter, worship leader
  • Audrey Assad, singer/songwriter recently signed to Sparrow Records with a widely acclaimed debut album 'Building Something Special'.

As with all the participating songwriters, Sean and Jude were able to have their songs listened to and critiqued by experienced musicians, worship leaders, and songwriters.  Sean was very inspired by the feedback in his group that included Laura Story and Bob Halligan, and Jude was pleased to get great input that included Jimi Williams and Audrey Assad.

DeoSound is all about good music, free.  Sean and Jude have certainly made some good music - and you can really get it for free.

You can download MP3 versions right from here - including versions with no lead vocal that you are free to use as a backing track for your own vocal.  Lyrics and chords are also available for free in PDF format.

The best part?  You are also free to give this music away to your friends, use it in your church or camp, even record it yourself and give away a thousand copies.  You can do this all for free for non-commercial purposes, thanks to the Creative Commons licensing Sean and Jude have used for their songs.

Take a listen, sing and enjoy the music.  Tell that songwriter in your church about next year's competition. And get your own entry ready for next year!

Get the stories behind the winning songs, hear about the prize trip to the Songwriters' Boot Camp, and get their songs for free!  And get ready for next year!
